US Feds Seek Life Sentence for Gunman in Trump Assassination Plot

(MENAFN) Federal prosecutors are demanding a life sentence for Ryan Routh, the man convicted of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach, Florida golf course in 2024.

In a sentencing memorandum submitted Friday before his February hearing, prosecutors alleged Routh, 59, "plotted painstakingly" over several months and intensified his efforts following the botched July 2024 assassination attempt by Thomas Crooks in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"Routh's criminal acts at the golf course were not impromptu," the memo said, adding that he sought to "accomplish what Crooks failed to complete."

Routh was convicted in September after a Secret Service agent discovered him targeting the president with a loaded SKS rifle from a concealed sniper position near the sixth hole—intervention that prevented any shots from being discharged.

Federal authorities emphasized Routh has displayed zero remorse for his actions, asserting that "nothing about Routh mitigates the need for a sentence of life in prison."

The February sentencing hearing will determine whether Routh receives the maximum penalty prosecutors are pursuing for the premeditated assassination plot against the sitting president.
