Trump Seeks to Impose Tariffs on Countries Buying Russian Oil

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced Sunday that forthcoming legislative action will empower his administration to levy tariffs against nations purchasing Russian oil, intensifying economic pressure on Moscow.

"We can raise tariffs on them very quickly," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One during his return flight from Mar-a-Lago to the White House.

The president specifically referenced India, which saw US tariffs surge to 50% last August due to its petroleum trade with Russia—a relationship Washington actively opposes.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, traveling with Trump, elaborated on the proposed congressional measure.

"India is now buying substantially less Russian oil," Graham said, adding that oil purchases were what was keeping Moscow's "war machine going."

Trump characterized Russia's economy as being in "lousy" condition as the nation approaches its fourth year of conflict with Ukraine while enduring sustained Western economic penalties.

Alleged Ukrainian strike on Russian president's residence
The Trump administration has framed its Moscow-directed pressure campaign as a pathway to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war, following a Florida summit last month between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Shortly after those discussions, Russia alleged Ukraine executed a drone assault on a Vladimir Putin residence in the northwestern Novgorod region. Kyiv swiftly rejected the accusation.

Trump initially described himself as "angry" over the purported attack, though the CIA subsequently determined the incident never occurred.

Briefed days earlier on the CIA assessment, the US president told reporters Sunday he rejected Russia's narrative.

"I don't believe that strike happened," he said.

"There is something that happened fairly nearby but had nothing to do with this," he added, noting that US officials had since been able to check the veracity of the Russian allegations.

"We just hope that Russia and Ukraine get it settled," he added.
