Rubio says Russia must be included in Ukraine peace talks

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that Russia will need to be “part of the equation” in any peace deal for Ukraine, following talks in Florida with Ukrainian negotiators led by top security official Rustem Umerov.

The discussions focused on President Donald Trump’s peace roadmap, with US envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner also present. Rubio noted progress had been made but stressed that more work remained, including continued engagement with Moscow, which he said the US now “has a pretty good understanding” of.

Umerov described the talks as “difficult, yet productive,” with tangible steps toward a just peace.

Trump’s plan has faced criticism for favoring Russia, though he maintains it was developed with input from both sides. Ukraine has so far rejected key Russian demands, including troop withdrawals from the Donbass and recognition of new borders. Putin has said a ceasefire is impossible while Ukrainian forces occupy Russian territory.
